Competence in visual literacy, the ability to convey ideas on imagery, is fundamental to art direction. In the 2012/13 academic year, I developed and instructed a course titled Art Direction in the Department of Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University. The instructional objectives were established to allow students to learn the literary devices used in advertising for creative execution. The example shown illustrates an editorial assignment to bring creative strategy into play, which was a distinguished student work created by Kristen Rebelo.
